Spaying and Neutering your Pets

Many people continue to question the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. There are some key factors to look at when pet owners and veterinarians are deciding if spaying or neutering is right for their pet. Spaying and neutering not only helps control the pet population, it also highly reduces the incidence of mammary (breast) cancer and can improve some behaviors dramatically.

Humane societies, rescue groups and shelters all over the United States are overflowing with pets that were given up or found as strays. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 24,539 pets were treated and cared for by the HSUS in 2006 alone. By spaying and neutering your pets, you guarantee that you will not add to that number.

When pets, who are not meant to be bred, have litters the owners of the parents are responsible for the care of the puppies or kittens! Just imagine the added cost, time and frustrations that come along with an unplanned litter. Female pets that are not spayed have a much higher incidence of breast cancer if they go through even one heat cycle. Males that are not neutered can have prostate issues as they age.

The behavioral benefits of spaying and neutering are incredible as well. Cats and dogs are less likely to stray if they do not have that added interest in pets of the other gender. They also have more focus for training and listen better without the distraction of certain hormones.

The actual procedure of spaying and neutering here at Carver Lake includes the absolute highest quality care and attention that your pet requires. We always do a complimentary physical examination the day of surgery to make sure your pet can handle the procedure.

Pre-anesthetic bloodwork tells the doctors how your pet’s internal organs are functioning so they can be sure that the anesthesia is tailored to your pets needs.

We also include a complimentary nail trim and application of Oravet to your pet’s teeth to help prevent plaque and tarter bulid-up. We check your pet’s mouth for any left over baby teeth and examinee their hips, elbows and knees during the procedure. Following the surgery, a certified veterinary technician stays with your pet to ensure they are warm and comfortable while they are waking up.
If you are interested in helping control the pet population, keeping your pet from straying, having a more trainable pet, and decreasing your pet’s chance of breast cancer then you are definitely interested in spaying or neutering your pet!

Give us a call here at Carver Lake to make an appointment to discuss what age would be best to spay or neuter your pet. Every pet is different, so it is important to check with the doctors as to when it is best to spay or neuter yours.
