Many people continue to question the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. There are some key factors to look at when pet owners and veterinarians are deciding if spaying or neutering is right for their pet. Spaying and neutering not only helps control the pet population, it also highly reduces the incidence of mammary (breast) cancer and can improve some behaviors dramatically.
Humane societies, rescue groups and shelters all over the United States are overflowing with pets that were given up or found as strays. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 24,539 pets were treated and cared for by the HSUS in 2006 alone. By spaying and neutering your pets, you guarantee that you will not add to that number. When pets, who are not meant to be bred, have litters the owners of the parents are in charge of all the care of the puppies or kittens! Just imagine the added cost, time and frustrations that come along with an unplanned litter.
Pets that are not spayed or neutered also have a much higher incidence of breast cancer. Female pets are at an increased risk for breast cancer if they go through even one heat cycle. Breast cancer is certainly something no one wants to put their pets through.
The behavioral benefits of spaying and neutering are incredible as well. Cats and dogs are less likely to stray if they do not have that added interest in pets of the other gender. They are also better able to focus without the added stress of hormones affecting their brain.
The actual procedure of spaying and neutering here at Carver Lake includes the absolute highest quality care and attention that your pet requires. We always do a complimentary physical examination for admission for surgery that day. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork tells the doctors how your pet's internal organs are functioning so they can be sure that anesthesia is appropriate. We also include a nail trim and an application of a plaque barrier film called Oravet on their teeth during the procedure. Checking your pet's mouth for any left over deciduous teeth and examining hips, elbows and knees for any issues are also routine procedures during surgery. Following the surgery, a certified veterinary technician stays with your pet to ensure they are warm and comfortable while they are waking up.
If you are interested in helping control the pet population, keeping your pet from straying, having a more trainable pet and decreasing your pet's chance of breast cancer then you are definitely interested in spaying or neutering your pet! Give us a call here at Carver Lake to make an appointment to discuss what age would be best to spay or neuter your pet. Every pet is different, so it is important to check with the doctors as to when it is best to spay or neuter yours.

Can you imagine how it would feel to not brush your teeth for months? Well, that is how most pets feel. Dental care is as important for pets as it is for people. Periodontal Disease can lead to larger problems such as tooth loss, heart problems, and major infections. In order to prevent these problems watch for the following signs of periodontal disease.
- Bad breath
- Yellow-brown crust on teeth
- Red or bleeding gums
- Tooth loss
- Abnormal drooling
- Change in eating or chewing habits
If you notice any of these signs, bring your pet in for a dental health evaluation. Visiting your veterinarian is the first step to better oral care for your pets. The second step is an at-home dental care routine.
There are several things you can do at home to help your pets maintain healthy teeth and gums. Brushing is the best form of defense. Be sure to use a toothbrush and toothpaste designed specifically for pets. Oral rinses are also available and help to prevent infections. Finally, there are treats and food that are good for your pet's teeth. All of these products are available at our clinic.
Your pets depend on you to provide them with the best care that you can. By taking care of their teeth and gums you are preventing more serious problems and helping them stay healthy and happy. Please call to make an appointment for your pet's dental health evaluation and let our staff show you how to care for your cat or dog's teeth successfully.

Carver Lake's Daycare Service |
Here at Carver Lake Veterinary Center all companion animals are welcome for daycare. Perhaps you have a new puppy or kitten and you need help with supervising or potty training while you are away from home. Maybe you are working long hours and need your pet cared for during the day. Perhaps your home is under construction or being shown to sell. No matter the reason, we are very happy to care for your pets during your busy daytime hours.
Paint and varnish fumes can be very harmful to pets. Carpet cleaning and lawn treatments may require that your pet be out of the home as well. Let Carver Lake take care of your pets during these times. We will keep them safe and comfortable so you can focus on taking care of your home.
Each daycare pet gets their very own kennel. We have blankets and rugs to keep your pet cozy, and always make sure they have fresh water.
We are very accommodating, and know how important it is to keep everyone happy during their stay. All daycare puppies and dogs get leashed walks around Carver Lake Veterinary Center's beautiful trails. Other pets such as cats, rabbits, ferrets, pocket pets, and reptiles, will be given attention too; ensuring that litter boxes and bedding stay clean and comfortable.
We recommend that you bring in a supply of your pet's food for that day so we can feed them their own food, on their schedule. Furthermore, if they are on special medication, we will administer them at the proper time.
Pets that stay with us on a regular basis enjoy their time here. They look forward to their walks, treats, and snuggle time. Their owners don't have to worry about their pets being at home alone for long periods of time and can relax knowing their critters are safe and comfortable. The staff here at CLVC has fun getting to know the daycare animals that stay with us. At the end of the day, everyone is happy!
If you and your pets are interested in our daycare service, please call or stop by Carver Lake Veterinary Center. We'd love to answer your questions and show you around our facility. Because other animals stay at CLVC, we do require that your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and has a current negative fecal sample. Our hours are Monday: 8-6pm, Tuesday - Thursday: 8-8pm, and Friday 8-6pm. We look forward to spending time with your pets...we know how important they are to you! | |
